Winter in Kashmir
Savor the transcendent beauty of winter in the enchanted land of Kashmir. The vale of Kashmir transforms from a glorious summer paradise into a magical wonderland of snow and frost in winter. The pall of white and the traditional pot of coal called Kangri to keep warm become ubiquitous. Falling flakes turn into piles of roadside snow, large tufts of rooftop snow, frozen icicles of frozen snow that dared to flow and of course sheets of mountain snow. The mountainsides offer up an opportunity for a wintery adventure and beckon the vagrant traveler. One can battle the bouts of cold with the nursing warmth and hospitality of the everyday Kashmiri. Kashmiris often cite an emperor who once famously said of their homeland – “If there is a paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here!”
The journey begins and ends in Srinagar. You will fly from Delhi to Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir. From Srinagar you will drive to Gulmarg, for some winter sports and the annual Snow Festival. Return to Srinagar for another’s day’s retreat in the valley before heading back to the din of Delhi.
- The adrenaline rush of winter sports at the Gulmarg Snow Festival.
- The spectacular gondola ride up the valley in Gulmarg for a sweeping view.
- The evening Aarti and the beautiful view of the sunset from atop the Shankaracharya Temple.
- The famed Kashmiri embroidered shawls, pretty carpets, jewelry, spices, and hand-carved wooden boxes.
