THE BACKWATERS

Fronds of palm excitedly sway and jostle as the energy in the atmosphere amps up. The skies darken over God’s Own Country, as Kerala is often affectionately called, muting its bright tones: the verdant greens of rich vegetation, the mustard-yellows of tuk-tuks, the vibrantly painted houses and striking colours of saris and lungis worn by people in the streets. The laden sky begins to falter, and the first droplets, plump and heavy, plummet to the world below with a thud, leaving their imprint on the ground, if only momentarily, before the landscape becomes awash with monsoon rains.
