Brijrama Palace

VARANASI, UP

The erstwhile royal palace in the holiest city of Varanasi, the Brijrama is an unlikely blend of luxury, heritage, and culture. Sitting at the edge of the ancient river which was born out of Lord Shiva’s lock of hair, the Palace is at the nerve centre of a network of alleys and walks which flow with the ancient wisdom of abstract ancestors.
Built in a distinct Maratha style by a ruler from Nagpur, a princely state in west India, the Palace was acquired by the king of Darbhanga who admired it like a treasure. Stone carved in the form of betel leaves, a characteristic element in the Maratha style of architecture, runs along the ceilings of the palace. Set in the ancient, stone sculptures and carvings grace the palace courtyard and corridors. Nuances define the walls, pillars, and ceilings of a bygone era. Decorated with chandeliers and weaves, the palace has glass inlays that can mesmerise a craftsman.
A view of the river from the grand suite lets you watch boatmen who ply people across the Ganges with saints chanting and people chittering, his empty boat floating on the calm in the wee hours, just before the temple bell wakes up the chaos of the day. Woven in a fabric of luxury, the ceilings have ornate paintings done with gold and silver. Explore the city from within the palace which is a true reflection of its ancient culture and royal heritage.
